TikTok Hiring “Talent Ambassadors” At 17 Colleges To Help Rake In Older Users

TikTok is going to college.

The shortform video app is looking to expand its user base by charming college students — and, to do that, it’s hiring “talent ambassadors.” Those ambassadors will traverse their campuses, offering TikTok swag and other incentives like free pizza and Amazon gift cards to students who download and use the app, Adweek reports.

Given that TikTok is particularly known for having a large number of young teen users, these ambassador positions seem poised to help TikTok (which has been downloaded more than one billion times globally) reach an older subset of users.

So far, ambassador jobs are only open to students at 17 universities in two states: Florida and Illinois. Postings originally opened in February and asked for students who could commit till the end of the 2018-2019 school year, but the listings have recently been re-posted, so it’s safe to say the app’s seeking a new round of folks, potentially for the 2019-2020 year. Schools involved include the University of Chicago, Florida State University, Northwestern University (in Evanston, Ill.), and Florida International University.

In exchange for their services, TikTok’s ambassadors will receive “competitive compensation” (Adweek

pressed the company for an exact wage, but TikTok didn’t reply), weekly talent coaching and “regular” career advice, and branded merchandise. Rather than focusing on pay, the listings lean heavily on how the job is an opportunity for students to build their resumes, build a network, and learn marketing skills.

According to job listings, ambassadors should be current, savvy students who know where the local cool cats’ hangouts are. They should consider themselves “self-starting entrepreneurs” with an interest in digital media and talent scouting.

“We are NOT looking for someone to hand out flyers or swag at college events,” the company writes. “We want a leader, entrepreneur, and out-of-the-box thinker to help build a community of on-campus creators who will use the TikTok platform to express their passion and craft.”

Some users who have already snagged the job are sharing the deets of their position on TikTok. Here’s an example (FYI, you may want to turn down your volume):
