Vice Appoints Veteran Journalist Katie Drummond SVP Of Digital

Beleaguered digital media firm Vice may have laid off 10% of its staff last month — or roughly 250 employees — but the company has just announced three hires within its North American offices, including a new SVP of digital, Katie Drummond.

Drummond will be tasked with leading Vice’s digital content strategy, including editorial and video, effective immediately. She previously served as deputy editor of Medium, executive editor for The Outline, and editor-in-chief of Gizmodo, and will seek to grow Vice’s presence across all platforms with a focus on brand alignment, talent management, and the unification of its video and editorial efforts, according to a release. Drummond will also help guide marketing and advertising initiatives, working with other Vice editors across the globe to ensure a consistent voice.

Vice, which is in the midst of a reorganization of sorts away from its homegrown digital brands and towards film, TV, and branded content, says that its YouTube and Snapchat channels have seen record growth so far in 2019.

“Katie is serious about making great digital things and brings out the best in the people she works with,” said Vice’s EVP of news, Josh Tyrangiel, to whom she will report out of the company’s Brooklyn headquarters. “We’re really excited to have her on our team.”

In addition to Drummond, Vice has announced two other appointments today, including Splinter and Gizmodo alum David Uberti as Vice News’ first-ever media reporter, and Cavel Khan as SVP of client partnerships, North America. Khan, who arrives at Vice from Twitter, will oversee all sales and account management teams, reporting directly to Doug Jossem, Vice’s chief revenue officer for North America.

Also with respect to its North American operations, Vice has announced the following promotions: Tim Daugherty as SVP of strategy and operations; Sarah Harrison as SVP of its creative studio; Ben Dietz as SVP of partner concepts and developments; and Dan Bowen as SVP of production.
