Netflix And Amazon Are Doubling Original Programming Slates To Compete In Crowded Space (Study)

Netflix and Amazon will be doubling their homegrown content catalogs in the future, with Netflix set to produce more than 250 new originals and Amazon set to produce at least 100.

Netflix is leaning into the success of series like Stranger Things by commissioning more sci-fi projects — as well as comedies — while Amazon is picking up originals across the genre board, says a new study by analytics firm Ampere Analysis, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Big spending on originals isn’t a new development for either SVOD service. Netflix revealed in May that 85% of its $8 billion 2018 programming budget was allocated to originals, and Amazon put a cool $60 million into its recently released Jack Ryan series alone. But what’s pushing them to expand so aggressively for the future is the influx of upcoming streaming services, per Ampere — particularly services like Disney

’s as-yet-unnamed platform and DC Universe, which will see both massive brands keeping new series and films to themselves rather than signing deals to stream them elsewhere.

Disney has already begun developing 19 of its own original series, including a Star Wars show with a whopping $100 million budget. Disney is also reportedly readying two original Marvel series that could have budgets equally as hefty.

YouTube Premium, Facebook Watch, and Apple are also ramping up originals, with 65 new properties combined, according to the study. YouTube will be amping up comedy series and decreasing its number of reality series, and Facebook will be focusing on news, documentary, and reality TV, but has also added more scripted shows, Ampere says.
