Welcome to YouTube Millionaires, where we profile channels that have recently crossed the one million subscriber mark. There are channels crossing this threshold every week, and each has a story to tell about YouTube success. Read previous installments of YouTube Millionaires here.
Self-taught Mexican makeup artist Daisy Marquez has only been posting videos on YouTube for a couple of years, but this 20-year-old has already made herself a member of the YouTube Millionaires. Marquez’s main channel, DaiMarquez, recently crossed the golden threshold, and her second channel, DaisyVlogs, is also amassing a sizeable audience of its own, with nearly 300,000 followers.
Marquez is of course known for her makeup #skillz, but also for her warmth and honesty. One of her most-watched videos, Story Time: I’m Undocumented (which has more than 1.1 million views), is a frank look at her immigration journey, and she often shares her experiences and perspectives as a Latina woman with her fans, whom she calls “flowers.”
Check out our discussion with Marquez to commemorate the milestone below:
Daisy Marquez: Reaching 1 million subscribers is such a huge milestone not only for myself but for my fans. They are the reason why I am where I am and I can’t thank them enough!
DM: I decided to launch my YouTube channel after I started doing shortened makeup tutorials on Snapchat. My fans wanted to see longer makeup tutorials, and I was able to provide them with these on my YouTube channel.
DM: I feel like what makes me stand out in the beauty industry is that in addition to my makeup tutorials, I incorporate additional topics — I talk about the harsh reality of what being an immigrant is like and how it has affected me in the past and present. I always keep it real and raw on my channel, and not a lot of people like to do that because it can harm relationships with brands, but I would rather be a role model for young girls who want to achieve their dreams and let them know not to be afraid to use their voice.
DM: I got started with my makeup journey when I joined drill team in high school. It was mandatory to wear makeup during performances and ever since then I fell in love with the art of makeup.
DM: It’s vital for me to be vocal about my identity as a Latina woman because I want people to know that despite what color, race, or background you come from, anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
DM: My favorite part of creating on YouTube is making content for people to watch when they are feeling some type of way. Some people watch my videos for entertainment and others have said that they watch them when they’re sad, lonely, etc. — and it warms my heart knowing that my content can entertain and help viewers.
DM: As of right now, not at the moment. I love my content revolving around beauty, fashion, and lifestyle! However, I do plan on getting more creative with my content.
DM: The next chapter for my channel is to give my fans a more personal vibe. Having said that, I plan to start vlogging aside from the makeup tutorials. I want to vlog my daily life, my journey being on tour and even behind the scenes of some upcoming projects I have in store! Although the tutorials are fun, I want to have a more personal connection to my flowers!
