David Dobrik Discusses Late-Night TV Host Ambitions During VidCon Q&A

After conquering the vlogosphere, David Dobrik now has its sights set on late-night television.

During a Q&A at VidCon, the 21-year-old shared his ambitions of becoming a talk show host. After conceding to a packed house that he was “pretty positive I’m bad at acting,” Dobrik said he suspected he might have potential as a host. Given his knack for turning the spotlight on the revolving cast of characters that regularly appear in his vlogs, as well a wildly successful podcast called Views, Dobrik’s instincts seem fairly acute.

At VidCon, Dobrik also revealed that he was inspired to start vlogging after ex-girlfriend Liza Koshy launched her own YouTube channel — as both had risen to renown on Vine. And though it’s an arduous and time-consuming process — that typically starts out with two-and-a-half hours of footage that must then be whittled down to 4 minutes and 20 seconds — Dobrik called being a creator “the best job in the world.” As for when his vlog might end, Dobrik said that the 420th vlog was originally supposed to be his last because he anticipated selling a show inspired by his YouTube channel. After that deal fell through, however, he said that there’s currently no end in sight.

Next up, Dobrik is hitting the road this summer with his Views co-host Jason Nash for a nine-city tour. “Right now, I’m saying ‘yes’ to a lot more things,” Dobrik concluded. “I turned down pretty much every meeting for the past two years — just because the vlog is so time-consuming. But now I’m taking a bunch of meetings and doing everything I should’ve been doing two years ago.”
