After Rumors Swirl, Nintendo Says Talks To Bring Video Services To Switch Are “Ongoing”

After Best Buy maybe-kinda-sorta revealed some future entertainment options for the Nintendo Switch, the company behind that console is clearing the air. In a statement, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé said Nintendo is engaged in “ongoing” conversations with video services, with Netflix and YouTube both rumored to be coming to the Switch.

The year-old Switch currently offers Hulu but does not yet have apps for YouTube or Netflix. However, if a since-deleted retail posting from Best Buy is to be believed, those two services could be on their way to Nintendo’s portable console. The listing, which was posted to the Nintendo Switch subreddit, shows YouTube and Netflix as part of the “world of instant entertainment” Switch users have access to.

After the listing in question was deleted, Nintendo of America was quick to set the record straight. “When we launched the Switch, we were very clear we wanted to position the device as a game-playing device,” said Fils-Aimé in a statement

. “We’ve done that, and so you’ve seen Hulu for example come on to the platform. In terms of other services, the conversations are on-going. We’ve got nothing to announce right now. But certainly those opportunities will come in due time.”

The Switch, which has been a smashing success for Nintendo, would certainly be a good platform for YouTube and Netflix to eye. The former of those video sites has particular cause to launch there, given its interest in appealing to viewers on TV screens. Therefore, don’t be surprised if YouTube ends up on the Switch in the near future.
