Twitter’s list of the most-tweeted-about celebrities of 2017 is mostly filled with musicians, but it also includes a pair of fraternal YouTube stars. Ethan and Grayson Dolan, who are known collectively as The Dolan Twins, reached the eighth and tenth positions, respectively, on Twitter’s ranking.
The Dolan Twins, who are both 17, have had a huge year in 2017. In September, they joined the cast of MTV’s rebooted version of TRL. Just days later, they took home the fan-voted Creator of the Year trophy at the 2017 Streamy Awards. Then, five weeks after that, Time Magazine named them as two of the 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017. Their placement on Twitter’s ranking recognizes their ability to generate thousands of mentions every time they press send on a new tweet.
Twitter’s list of buzzy celebrities counted tweets from around the globe to determine the personalities who generated the most conversation in 2017. Three members of the top ten are K-pop groups, while four more — Justin Bieber, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Camila Cabello — are performers from the Anglophone world. Rounding out the list is Maine Mendoza, an actress who hails from The Philippines.
The Dolan Twins have maintained a close relationship with Twitter as they have risen to digital stardom. They first gained widespread attention on Vine, the now-defunct video capture service owned by Twitter. In 2016, they participated in an ad campaign that highlighted the social media platform’s ties to the online video community.
Ethan Dolan has 4.86 million Twitter followers, while Grayson, who is 20 minutes younger than his brother, has 4.85 million followers. The twins also reach a large audience on YouTube, where their shared channel has more than 4.7 million subscribers.
