Netflix Adds HDR Playback For The iPhone 8, iPhone X, And iPad Pro

While Netflix already supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) streaming on the brand new Apple TV 4K as well as a handful of Android devices, the video service is now rolling out HDR playback on the iPhone 8, iPhone X, and the 2nd generation iPad Pro.

HDR improves the contrast, clarity, and color range of video streams — and it will come to the above devices as part of Netflix’s latest app update in iOS 11. Netflix already offers Dolby Vision HDR — an HDR variant — on a handful of devices that run Android, including the LG G6, Sony Xperia XZ Premium, and Samsung Galaxy Note8.

While not all content on Netflix is HDR-ready, all of the streaming service’s original shows and movies are, according to The Verge

, and users can find additional HDR content simply by typing the phrase in their search bars.

Netflix isn’t the only platform looking to up its video quality. YouTube launched support for HDR video on smart televisions late last year, and then rolled out the tech on select mobile devices earlier this month. Right now, compatible devices include: Google’s Pixel, the LG V30, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Note8, and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium — though the iPhone has yet to receive the update.
