Felicia Day’s Web Series ‘The Guild,’ Now Ten Years Old, Lands In The Smithsonian’s Permanent Collection

July 27, 2017 marked the ten year anniversary of the premiere of The Guild. Felicia Day‘s web series, which followed a group of gamers as they navigated their interpersonal relationships both inside and outside of their PCs, has endured as one of the great examples of its medium, and it has received a memorialization that fits such a lofty status. During a panel at Comic-Con, Day announced that several items from The Guild‘s production has entered the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institution.

As Day explained to Tubefilter, her discussions with the Smithsonian began two years when the government-funded organization approached her. After lengthy talks, the Smithsonian selected curios from The Guild to add to its American History collection, in order to represent the world of new media. The chosen artifacts include several objects related to the song “Do You Want To Date My Avatar,” including the outfit Day wore in that video, the staff wielded by her character Codex, and her original handwritten lyric sheet. She has also donated the original script from season one of her show to the Smithsonian’s collection.

The announcement of The Guild‘s Smithsonian connection took place during a Comic-Con panel that featured all of the web series’ main cast members. Sandeep Parikh, who portrayed the warlock Zaboo, joked that the show’s collection would be displayed “right next to the Constitution.”

No matter where in the Smithsonian The Guild ends up, its enshrinement is a milestone achievement. If you’ve never seen the series, all six of its seasons can be found on its website. They are also available on Netflix.
