Psy Becomes First Asian Artist To Receive YouTube Diamond Play Button

Korean popstar Psy, whose Gangnam Style music video holds the distinction of being the most-viewed YouTube clip of all time with 2.9 billion total views, just surpassed another milestone: he is now the first Asian solo artist to surpass 10 million subscribers on his channel.

Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, received a Diamond Play Button from YouTube to commemorate the honor, reports The Jakarta Post. “YouTube to me has been an excellent platform and a ‘bridge,’ which has allowed me to extend my decades long singing career to foreign countries as well,” he said, adding that more videos would arrive on his channel soon.

Psy surpassed 10 million subscribers on the heels of an 18-month hiatus, per the Post

, and the release of his new album, 4×2=8, on May 10. Two new videos from the album, New Face and I Luv It, released two weeks ago, have clocked 36 million and 35 million views, respectively.

In addition to the Diamond Play Button for 10 million subscribers, YouTube also doles out a Gold Play Button for creators who surpass 1 million subscribers and a Silver Play Button for creators who pass 100,000 subscribers. And last December, the company sent Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg — YouTube’s most-subscribed creator of all time — a custom-made Ruby Play Button molded in the form of a ‘bro fist’, which is his channel logo.
