Indie Spotlight: ‘Blue Light’ Offers Mysterious, Head-Turning Sci-Fi

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.

The series featured in this week’s Indie Spotlight has only released two episodes so far, but that taste has been enough to capture my interest. Blue Light, from Cagesafe Productions, is a sci-fi series that combines time travel, mysterious phenomena, and a 1950s setting in one neat package.

The protagonist of Blue Light is Mildred (Eileen O’Donnell), a woman who comes home to find that people who live 50 years into the future (i.e. in the present day) are appearing within her TV screen. They have all had encounters with the titular blue light, which has caused a litany of unforeseen changes in their lives. Meanwhile, more anachronisms begin to appear in Mildred’s life, such as a cell phone that turns up on her front porch in episode two

From what we’ve seen of Blue Light so far, it’s still hard to tell where the web series is going, but there’s enough happening to keep us engaged along the way. The decision to go with a black-and-white style allows Cagesafe to strongly define its intended aesthetic, and Rick Syzbowski‘s score is chilling. I’m curious to see more.
