For more of this election cycle, longtime liberal commentator Keith Olbermann has laid low, but now, the former MSNBC, Current TV, and ESPN host will launch a new web series for GQ beginning on September 13th.
The web series will be called The Closer with Keith Olbermann, and the plan is to release bi-weekly episodes leading up to the election. Politico, which first broke the new of the new show, didn’t specify whether it was using the “twice a week” or “every two weeks” definition of bi-weekly, though other reports suggest that we’ll be getting two new Olbermann takes per week. A GQ spokesperson told Politico that the left-wing anchor will “be providing commentary on the election, with the flexibility to delve into other timely issues when relevant.”
Unsurprisingly, Olbermann will make Donald Trump his top priority. In a short video released on the GQ YouTube channel and online video platform The Scene (which is run by GQ owner Conde Nast), Olbermann noted that, as the 2016
election cycle moves past Labor Day, Trump’s seemingly-hilarious mishaps because less funny all the time, and he hopes to use what influence he has to get the Republican presidential candidate to flee “to the Cayman Islands.” He concludes with a simple instruction: “Watch this space.”Olbermann’s work has always been polarizing, and there’s little doubt that episodes of The Closer will pick up plenty of dislikes along the way. Still, there’s no denying that the Internet has proved to be a fitting home for his political screeds, with his personal YouTube channel serving as Exhibit A. While most of its videos are currently geo-blocked in the United States, it went viral several times and generated plenty of conversation, making it a strong entry within the “John Oliver” genre of digital video. Look for The Closer to live within the same niche, and don’t be surprised if it starts arguments across social media in the coming months.
