Monty Python’s John Cleese Launches His Own YouTube Channel

A man with more than 50 years of comedy experience is taking his crack at YouTube. John Cleese, who is best known as one of the co-founders of the British comedy troupe Monty Python, has launched a personal channel on which he will share sketches, stories, and other videos.

Cleese co-founded Monty Python in 1969 and went on to engineer some of the group’s most popular sketches, including “Dead Parrot” and the “Ministry of Silly Walks.” He also served up several memorable roles in the group’s films, including his portrayal of the indefatigable Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail . Beyond Python, Cleese has also appeared in several films, including the James Bond franchise (where he played Bond’s gadget man, Q) and Harry Potter (which featured him as the jovial ghost Nearly-Headless Nick).

With his YouTube channel, Cleese will continue his legendary career. “On my YouTube, channel, you’ll be able to watch hour after hour of me rathing about the other Pythons and recounting tales from the old days, showing you pictures of cats, and discussing the latest DailyMail hatchet job on me,” he says in an introductory video.

Cleese has wasted no time getting to work. He has already shared several sketches, including one that pokes fun at for-profit churches.

The 76-year-old Cleese may not have the energy or desire to keep up with the rigorous schedule that YouTube stardom usually demands, but if he does remain active, his comedy stylings will be a great fit with digital audiences. His silly-yet-satirical work has held up for decades, and I see no reason why it won’t continue to hold up online.

A few thousand fans have already subscribed to Cleese’s channel. Meanwhile, his Monty Python work can also be found on YouTube, where it has been collected on an official channel since 2014.
