A cartoon called Rosaline, which premiered on Hulu earlier this week, aims to illustrate a gay relationship in a comprehensible and heartwarming way for young viewers.
The four-minute short follows a young heroine named Rosaline through the woods on her way to bring her “sweetheart” lunch. She encounters various characters found in traditional fairytales along the way — a witch seeking to poison her, a wolf threatening to eat her, and, after she outwits them both, a fairy godmother offering to grant her a wish. But when Rosaline’s fairy godmother suggests dressing her up and finding her a prince, Rosaline stops her mid-spell. “I do not need your magic or a prince to save the day,” she says. “My sweetheart’s waiting for me, and now I’ll be on my way.” She then arrives home, picnic basket in hand, where she is greeted by her girlfriend (or wife).
Rosaline is the brainchild of Daniel Errico, who created another LGBT-themed cartoon for Hulu in 2015 called The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived, about a young knight who rescues both a princess and a prince and then must choose whom to marry. Rosaline is voiced by the actress Teri Polo.
“Historically, kids’ media shies away from LGBT love, marriage, and identity, which can cause an imbalance,” Errico told The Huffington Post. “We are missing an opportunity to foster children’s natural ability to accept and understand themselves and others, and that can have serious consequences later on in life.”
