We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now. Read previous installments here.
A new web series is talking about menstruation in an amusing and informative way. It’s called Period Piece, and it traces the history of its titular subject through sketch comedy.
Period Piece‘s title takes on a double meaning. The show is about menstruation, but it is also quite literally a series of six period pieces, none lasting longer than three minutes. Each episode examines how periods were treated in a specific era, ranging from biblical times to the present. The series’ funniest installment, for example, takes place in Enlightenment-era France and imagines menstrual blood as a series of fragrances.
With Period Piece, creator Liliana Tandon has pulled off a rare triple threat: She has devised a show that is entertaining, educational, and socially-conscious all at once. More than anything, though, Period Piece is funny, and that makes it an enjoyable watch for all viewers — even if, like me, they’ve never experienced the menstrual cycle themselves.
