Vimeo has released a new version of its iOS app, and it comes with some notable changes. Among other features, the video site’s new app promotes discovery through both a new design and a new picture-in-picture feature.
A new button on the app’s homepage allows users to browse through the Vimeo library by scrolling across specific categories. Each category is further divided into more granular subcategories, thus encouraging users to discover new videos that are tailored to their specific interests.
Vimeo showed off the new discovery feature with a short video:
Vimeo wants its users to be able to watch videos while they continue to discover, and that’s where another new mobile feature — picture-in-picture — comes in. As viewers browse through the app, their current videos will remain anchored to the screen. By introducing this feature, which is “optimized for iOS 9,” Vimeo is keeping pace with YouTube
, which introduced picture-in-picture in a recent app update of its own.“We spent a lot of time building out a robust feature set for the app that leverages everything iOS 9 has to offer,” said Christophe Gillet, VP of Product at Vimeo, in a press release. “Vimeo’s new iOS app makes discovering, browsing and watching gorgeous videos straight from Vimeo’s global creator community even easier.”
Other new features that have arrived with the new version of Vimeo’s mobile app include a redesigned video player and an improved backend that increases upload speed. To experience all these changes for yourself, download the Vimeo app from the App Store.
