Chart Toppers
Justin Bieber held on to his #1 spot on the worldwide chart this month. The 21-year-old international pop star has seen incredible online video success ever since the release of the music videos associated with the mid-November 2015 release of his fourth studio album Purpose. Despite a 5% downtick in views on the month, Bieber’s online video catalog still ended January with more than 824.3 million views.
In a distant second place is Ryan ToysReview. The family-friendly YouTube channel has been the recipient of hockey stick-like growth in terms of video views, with audiences watching uploads of its titular six-year-old star playing with toys to the tune of 667 million views on the month.
In the #3 spot is WWE. The YouTube home of all things World Wrestling Entertainment took home nearly 575.9 million views in January. Up next in fourth places is mashamedvedtv. The uncannily popular Russian children’s cartoon was up 17% to top out with over 534.9 million views in the month.
And rounding out the Top 5 is FamilyFunPack. The home video exploits of America’s favorite YouTube family of seven racked up more than 516.5 million views in the 31 days of the month.
Top Gainers
The honor of one of our our Top Gainers this month goes to The Late Late Show with James Corden.
James Corden is becoming a major player on YouTube. The 37-year-old’s eponymous, very late night, CBS talk show has seen substantial growth in the past few months thanks the broadcast TV network’s #1 position in the market and Corden’s relatably charming personality and ability to create viral fodder with at least a little bit of substance.
In his Carpool Karaoke series, Corden picks up celebrities off the street in order to alleviate the boredom from his daily commute. Corden and said celebrities then sing along to songs from the radio in between banter ranging from ephemeral to personal to idiosyncratic. It’s a fantastic series and it’s been a very large contributor to The Late Late Show‘s recent upward trajectory on YouTube, helping it to a 109% month-over-month increase in views, almost 196.9 million views on the month, and the #47 spot on the worldwide chart.
Channel Distribution
The Top 100 Most Viewed YouTube channels this month amassed in aggregate a total of 23,541,093,718 views. Here’s a look at the distribution of those channels broken down by the most-represented YouTube Multi-Channel Networks on the chart:
VEVO:19 channels in the Top 100. Justin Bieber is the network’s highest ranking channel at #1.
Maker Studios: 11 channels in the Top 100, with TheDiamondMinecart at #18.
BroadbandTV, Machinima, XMediaDigital: 3 channels each in the Top 100, with BBTV’s AuthenticGames at #52, Machinima’s ToyPudding at #46, and XMediaDigital’s mashamedvedtv at #4.
XMediaDigital: 3 channels in the Top 100, with mashamedvedtv at #5.
AIR, BuzzFeed, Collective Digital Studio, Movieclips, WMG: 2 channels each in the Top 100, with AIR’s Miss Katy at #21, BuzzFeed’s BuzzFeed Video at #17, Collective Digital Studio’s FamilyFunPack at #5, Movieclips’ Movieclips Trailers at #44, and WMG’s Atlantic Records at #72.
