Yet another YouTube channel has discovered an inventive use for the 360-degree video format. This time, it’s Sam Gorski and Niko Pueringer’s CorridorDigital that has embraced the all-angles approach, utilizing it to film an interactive video version of Where’s Waldo?.
The CorridorDigital video takes place across a series of beachside locations in Santa Monica. Each time the scene resets, Waldo (played by CorridorDigital’s Wren Weichman) finds himself a new hiding spot. From there, Gorski and Pueringer lead a hunt for the iconic red-striped character. As viewers conduct their searches, they can explore the video’s gorgeous, meticulous settings, which include dozens of on-screen characters and numerous pop culture references.
As CorridorDigital advises, the Where’s Waldo? video is best watched in 4K resolution, in order to properly absorb all of the details within it.
CorridorDigital isn’t the first channel to use the 360-degree format as the basis for an interactive game, but Gorski and Pueringer are technical wizards, and their Where’s Waldo? adaptation puts their skills on full display. As a behind-the-scenes video shows, the filmmaking duo didn’t purchase a 360-degree camera; instead, in order to preserve the high quality of their video, they 3D-printed a camera rig and set five GoPro videos on it, each one point in a different direction. In post-production, they stitched the video together using software from Kolor.
360-degree videos are an ascendant category on YouTube, and the video site’s community is only just now getting its creative juices flowing. CorridorDigital’s take on the format won’t be the last 360-degree video we write about, but it is one of the best ones to show up so far.
