Director Kevin Smith Partners With Defy Media For His YouTube Channel

Silent Bob is speaking up on YouTube. Kevin Smith, known for directing cult favorite films like Clerks and Dogma, has partnered with production company and multi-channel network Defy Media to launch his own channel on YouTube, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Smith is known for his boisterous opinions about nerd culture, and his first series with Defy Media underscores that particular idea. It’s called Fat Man on Batman, and it serves as a video version of Smith’s podcast of the same name. Here’s the latest episode, released on January 18th:

Defy Media will assist Smith with the promotion, growth, and ad sales of his YouTube channel, while also offering him a production space for his podcast. In addition, Smith has teamed up with longtime collaborator Jason Mewes for What’s in the Box with Jay and Silent Bob, a series distributed through Defy’s newly-launched subscription service, ScreenJunkies Plus.

“Defy made this dream come true in a big bad way,” said Smith. “I just want to roll out of bed and talk about Star Wars. They made it possible.”

While Smith’s partnership with Defy is new, he is no stranger to YouTube. In 2013, he partnered with Maker Studios to supposed another channel of his, SeeSMod. Since then, he has guest starred on a number of well-known web series, including Epic Meal Time, =3, and Cinema Sins. Recently, he also popped up on the Defy-owned ScreenJunkies channel.

As he continues to explore the world of online video, Smith will maintain his directing career. His next film, Yoga Hosers is due out later in 2016. It will feature YouTube star Harley Morenstein in a supporting role.
