Guillermo Del Toro To Create Netflix Series Produced By DreamWorks Animation

Netflix plans to greatly increase the amount of original content it produces in 2016, and it has started out the year by announcing an expansion of an existing deal. The streaming video platform and DreamWorks Animation will team up for at least two additional programs: A reboot of the 80s cartoon Voltron and a fantasy series called Trollhunters, which will be helmed by Guillermo del Toro.

While previous collaborations between Netflix and DreamWorks have resulted in kid-friendly fare like All Hail King Julien and The Adventures of Puss in Boots, but the two new series could have more appeal for adults. Trollhunters is particularly appealing, given del Toro’s history of dark, gritty fantasy films. The Mexican filmmaker is best known for his grim 2006 fairy tale, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Netflix and DreamWorks first teamed up to create content in 2013, when the two companies announced a multi-series deal

. The majority of those projects were based off existing DreamWorks IPs like Madagascar, Shrek, and Veggie Tales, though the new deal suggests Jeffrey Katzenberg’s studio is interested in exploring fresher territory. At the same time, The Hollywood Reporter believes Netflix and DreamWorks will make more series based off the latter company’s existing franchises.

“DreamWorks Animation is synonymous with great storytelling that families around the world enjoy,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Series for Netflix, in a release. “It’s with great pleasure that we expand on an already successful relationship with DreamWorks Animation to bring more premium kids and family television to Netflix members globally.”

Both the Voltron reboot and Trollhunters will arrive in 2016, though their exact release dates are not known at this time.
