Dictionary.com Asks Social Media Stars To Define Neologisms

Each year, Dictionary.com adds new words, phrases, and proper nouns to its database. In 2015, the list includes chillax, respawn, and feels, but what do those words mean? What do they connote? In order to answer those questions, Dictionary.com enlisted a group of social media influencers, who offered up their personal definitions for this year’s neologisms.

To create the videos, Dictionary.com teamed up with Collab, which is best known for working with Vine stars. Collab turned to its roster of partners, including Meghan McCarthy, Lizzza, Harmony & Elliot, Matt King, Brock Baker, Rickey Thompson, and JD Witherspoon, and turned them loose on the dictionary’s new words. The results are a mixed bag. Some of them are earnestly informative; others, such as the video describing “yaaas” (yes, that is a real word now), move more in the cringe comedy direction.

The videos were posted to Dictionary.com’s YouTube channel and featured on the website’s homepage, which also offers up words of the day and word facts. There are seven videos in all, and they define just a small handful of the new words that have been added to the Dictionary.com database. A full list of those words and phrases–including bestie, facepalm, doge, and EGOT–is available via Dictionary.com.
