YouTube Sports Stars Dude Perfect Help Renovate NYC Street Basketball Courts

Online video audiences know Dude Perfect can perform some pretty mean trick shots. Now, the sports and entertainment YouTube group will also be known for its philanthropic nature. The Dude Perfect team partnered with YouTube and the New York City Parks Department for The Perfect Court initiative, to help renovate the city’s Tompkins Square Park basketball courts.

The Tompkins Square Park renovations in Manhattan’s East Village will include an entire resurfacing of the courts with new cement and paint, and installing new basketball hoops. Construction will begin sometime in May. The NYC parks department expects the courts to be ready by the time school lets out for the summer.

To celebrate the upcoming renovations, Dude Perfect, YouTube, and the NYC Parks Department hosted a kick-off celebration on May 4, 2015. The event, which was open to the public, featured trick shot challenges, prizes, and the chance for Dude Perfect fans and community members alike to hang out and snap photos using the hashtag #DudePerfectCourt with the group’s members.

“Tompkins Square Park is one of New York’s best-loved green spaces, and the basketball have played host to generation of players,” NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said in a release. “NYC Parks is grateful to Dude Perfect and YouTube for their generous effort to give the East Village a refurbished place to shoot hoops this summer.”

“We at Dude Perfect believe in the importance of having fun with those in your community, that is how we all come together!” explained Dude Perfect member Garrett Hilbert. “We hope this new court will encourage people to get outside, get some exercise, shoot some hoops, and make every day game day.”

When Dude Perfect isn’t performing an epic trick shot or lending a hand to parks renovation, the group is involved with plenty of online video-related initiatives. In January 2014, the Dude Perfect guys were founding partners of the sports-themed multi-channel network The Whistle. The YouTube group also recently appeared at YouTube’s tenth birthday party, and was featured in the latest round of advertisements featuring creators from Google’s online video site.

The Dude Perfect channel currently boasts over 5.2 million subscribers and more than 620 million video views.
