MTV is trying out some new video technology for its upcoming 2015 MTV Movie Awards. The network will use Twitter’s Periscope live streaming app to cover the red carpet in addition to its regular All-Access feeds at the star-studded event on April 12, 2015.
The Viacom network will use the shiny new technology to broadcast fashion interviews and red carpet arrivals, live from the Nokia Theater L.A. Live throughout the evening. To make the experience even more unique, the network has partnered with Orad Hi-Tec Systems to use the company’s Augmented Reality technology. This will allow the Movie Awards show producers to insert 3D graphics into the live Periscope video stream to create a multi-dimensional experience.
MTV has previous experience with Periscope thanks to a live session with one-half of the Vlogbrothers and VidCon co-founder John Green. Green took over MTV’s Periscope account on April 6 to discuss the upcoming film adaptation of his Paper Towns book (much like James Gunn recently did for a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Q&A). According to Adweek, Green’s 20-minute live stream drew in over 1,300 viewers and more than 700 questions.
“New app-based livestreaming technologies are just another way for us to tap into the excitement and real-time nature of our events, and to develop different approaches for the different features and communities specific to each of these apps,” said MTV’s SVP of Connected Content Colin Helm to Adweek.
MTV will also bring back its yearly All-Access Livestream hosted by T-Mobile
to the Movie Awards, but this time with a twist. Through allaccess.mtv.com, fans will be able to watch broadcasts from (and even switch between) more than 20 camera feeds in locations around the venue. This year, MTV added an additional “locked” camera called the “Unleash Cam,” focused on the celebrity audience. Once fans tweet the hashtag #FrontRowUnleashed a designated amount of times set by MTV, the network will unlock the camera’s stream.Several YouTube influencers have also been tapped by MTV to serve as the network’s self-described “All-Access ringleaders.” Vine star Jerome Jarre, YouTuber Lily Singh (known as IISuperwomanII to online video fans), and Viner Elisabeth Jakovenko will encourage live stream viewers to switch between cameras to customize their live viewing experiences. The digital celebrities will also generate buzz for MTV Movie Awards pre-, during, and post-show event on social media.
“By leveraging new platforms like Periscope and working with our partners to create fun, integrated experiences with existing initiatives like All Access Live, we’re continuing to evolve the award show experience and empowering the audience to get involved in the show like never before,” Helms added in a release.
