Get ready, Community fans: The long-awaited sixth season of Dan Harmon’s community college sitcom is two months away. Yahoo Screen has bestowed it with a March 17th release date and has released a promotional video featuring the show’s cast.
Community first came to Yahoo in June 2014, one month after it was canceled by NBC. Since then, Yahoo has gone a long way to promote the show, which is without a doubt the most significant original series it has ever distributed. The latest bit of promotional material features the show’s cast members, including newcomer Paget Brewster, as they some subliminal messaging to encourage fans to tune in.
Yahoo’s release strategy goes against what has become the norm in online video. Instead of releasing all Community episodes at once, it will debut the first two episodes on March 17th and will drop a new episode each Tuesday after that.
And what sort of content should Community fans expect? Harmon has offered a few hints. Speaking at the Winter TV Press Tour 2015, the always-entertaining showrunner was in fine form, claiming that Community‘s sixth season would be a “loosening of the corset.” That’s not surprising, since Harmon and his writers are now freed from NBC’s tighter restrictions, but Harmon said he will not experiment too much with the show’s format. For example, episodes won’t stray much from the 22-minute runtime they had on TV, though Harmon said they may be “chubby–like me. A little extra.”
When asked about the potential longevity of his show, Harmon said he’s “not writing as if it’s the end,” even though many fans have proclaimed six seasons and a movie as the show’s ideal run. Harmon, on the other hand, seems like he’ll make more Community episodes as long as he can. “It will be weird when we are canceled by the Internet,” he quipped.
