John Oliver Rants About New Year’s Eve Traditions In Hiatus YouTube Video

John Oliver recently gave his audiences a little between-season, end-of-the-year treat full of his usual satirical remarks. The Last Week Tonight host took to YouTube for a three-minute web exclusive where he discusses how New Year’s Eve really is “the worst” holiday.

Oliver is currently on hiatus before season two of his HBO talk show premieres on February 8, 2015. However, the host decided to keep his audiences attuned to his work by leveraging the powerful YouTube presence he and his Last Week Tonight team have built since early this year. Oliver posted his New Year’s Eve rant video to Google’s online video site on December 29, 2014, and so far it’s garnered over 1.2 million views.

In the video, Oliver notes how everyone is united by a hatred of New Year’s Eve. He claims the holiday forces people to do three things they usually hate: interact with strangers, become drunk while cold and tired, and “having to stare at Ryan Seacrest for five solid minutes, waiting for him to tell you what the time is.” The Last Week Tonight

host then provides several not-so-legitimate excuses viewers can use to get out of New Year’s Eve parties and events.

This is not the first web-exclusive video Oliver has made. During one of his off weeks, the comedian posted a clip where he read and poked fun of comments left on his YouTube videos. Oliver also teamed up with Mashable and Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster to create a children’s news segment about words called “W-ORD Channel 7 News.” The British host was also featured in the YouTube Rewind video for 2014.

The Last Week Tonight YouTube channel currently boasts over 1.2 million subscribers and 173 million video views.
