At the end of the 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer, the counselors at Camp Firewood agree to meet up ten years down the line. 2011 has come and gone, but if new reports are to be believed, the reunion might only be a few years behind schedule. According to E!, Netflix is moving forward with a Wet Hot American Summer miniseries, with the film’s director, David Wain, on board.
A Netflix version of Wet Hot American Summer has been rumored since May, and if E!’s report is to be believed, the project will begin production in January, with Wain and co-writer Michael Showalter returning to pen the script. Wain has already shown off his ability to write and direct compelling content on the Internet; his web series Wainy Days won multiple awards across five seasons.
The big question, though, is whether the original film’s cast will reprise their roles in the sequel. Wet Hot American Summer served as an early credit in the careers of Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, and Elizabeth Banks, who all had supporting roles. Other actors who appeared in the film include Paul Rudd, Janeane Garofalo, and David Hyde Pierce. Assembling all of these notable names would be a tall task, though in a 2012 Reddit AMA, Wain stated that the “original cast will return” for the sequel.
The Wet Hot American Summer miniseries would join other upcoming comedy projects on Netflix, including Judd Apatow’s Love and Tina Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The online video platform has not yet commented on E!’s report.
