It’s time to dust off those old World of Warcraft accounts, because The Guild is coming back.
19 years ago (has it really been that long?), Felicia Day created and starred in a show that poked fun at the gameplay and interpersonal dynamics of World of Warcraft clans. The Guild went on to become a shining example of the web series format, and it ultimately ran for six seasons before Day put away her staff and moved on to other ventures.
Flash forward to 2026, and the same cultural climate that propelled The Guild to the forefront of the web series world is back in vogue. Critical Role is huge on Twitch, video games like Minecraft have made it to theaters, and nerdy creator groups have their own conventions
. The time is ripe for a return to the universe of The Guild, and Day is delivering. The multihyphenate actor, screenwriter, and creator is turning to Kickstarter to raise funds for a feature film that will continue the story of The Guild. Day is preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her seminal web series by spearheading a project that will reunite The Guild‘s principal cast members.
Day could probably get studio backing for a Guild movie — we’re talking about a franchise that’s important enough to enshrined in the Smithsonian, after all — but doing so would require her to sacrifice her creative vision. As she told Polygon last month, that’s a nonstarter.
“I’m reviving The Guild to make a movie because it’s going to be on my terms, hopefully,” Day said. “I want to make things with and for the people who love them. So I’m very excited to do a Kickstarter, and we’ll see what happens. I have a story I want to tell, and I’ll make it in whatever format I can make it in.”
The decision to revive The Guild as a movie comes with a touch of irony. After years of dormancy, the web series format has returned to cultural prominence thanks in large part to microdramas on TikTok. Instead of riding that wave, Day wants to turn The Guild into something bigger than it’s ever been before.
She’ll get her chance to start telling her story once she officially fires up her Kickstarter campaign, which is currently listed as “launching soon.” Community may be struggling to make good on its promise of “six seasons and a movie,” but Day is prepared to fulfill that pledge for The Guild, and among old-school web series fans, there will be much rejoicing.
