VEVO has released its list of the most-viewed music videos of the year, and an Australian songstress sits at the top. Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy” video, which drew attention from LA to Tokyo, outpaced all other VEVO videos by scoring 380 million views in 2014.
The “Fancy” video was inspired by the film Clueless, of which Azalea is a “huge fan.” “‘Fancy’ is such a West Coast sounding song and beat that I felt like this would be the perfect opportunity for me to use this film,” she said
. “It’s a movie about Valley Girls and that’s something very West Coast but not very rap. I thought it would be a cool tongue-in-cheek way to be very L.A. but unexpected.”“Fancy” wasn’t Azalea’s only appearance in the top ten. She has a guest verse in Ariana Grande’s “Problem”, which ended up as the #6 most-viewed video in VEVO’s ranking. She wasn’t the only Aussie to show up on the list, either. In a year when “A-pop” made a huge leap forward in the mainstream, Sia’s “Chandelier” ended up seventh with more than 350 million views.
While its count nearly matched the 385 million views scored by 2013 chart-topper “Wrecking Ball”, the “Fancy” video benefitted from its early release date. It arrived on VEVO on March 3rd, well before other top videos like “All About That Bass“, “Shake It Off“, and “Anaconda“. In particular, it is possible for Meghan Trainor’s anthem to pass “Fancy” before the end of the year, but for now, Azalea is #1.
