Indie Spotlight: Instagram Series ‘Take Care Of Me’ Does Anything But

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now.  Read previous installments here

Where would you expect to find a web series online? YouTube, right? While most can be found on that traditional new media, the horror web series Take Care of Me took a tip from previous Indie Spotlighters and debuted exclusively on Instagram.

Created by filmmaker Jaiden Frost, Take Care of Me tells the story of Steven, a young man who asks his friend to “take care of him” because he knows he’s going to get trashed at a party. However, when Steven wakes up hungover at home, it appears his friend didn’t take care of him… at all. Not only can Steven not remember how he he made it back from the event, but he also discovers he may have very well committed a brutal crime during his wild night.

The first few episodes all end with eerie cliffhangers, like when Steven completely missed spotting the bloody knife on the counter or when he doesn’t notice the literal blood on his hands because of his drunken stupor. All this intrigue and more, with a production quality that would befit a series with episodes lasting far longer than 15 seconds a piece.

Described as a “micro web series” on its site, Take Care of Me premiered on Instagram on Monday, October 6, and has released a new episode every day since. Each of the 13 installments is no longer than the quarter-minute limit Instagram places on its users’ videos, bringing the total length of the entire show to only three minutes and 25 seconds.

Even if you’re not a horror fan (like me), you can still appreciate this series’ creative delivery method. And if you do choose to watch all of Take Care of Me, the series looks well worth your (albeit short) time.

OTHER UNDER-THE-RADAR SERIES TO CHECK OUT

  • Texting With Gosling. It’s every woman’s dream — to meet Ryan Gosling and start texting back and forth with him. Except this young lady actually does it.
  • A Bit Much. Based on the play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, this modern interpretation finds Bridget and Ben as quarrelling counselors at Camp Messina.
  • Doin’ Everythin’ with KateD and JacobA. When you need to (not really) learn how to do something, check out this random, nonsensical “how to” instructional series.
