Crackle Shares Details About Impending ‘Joe Dirt’ Sequel

At the 2013 Digital Content Newfronts, Crackle announced its plan to distribute a sequel to Joe Dirt, the 2001 comedy starring David Spade. Well over a year later, production on Joe Dirt 2 has begun, with Crackle planning a 2015 release date.

Spade will reprise his role as the titular character, a mullet-toting Louisianan who is as dumb as his last name. Crackle hasn’t shared any plot details, though it did note in a release that the sequel “will pick-up where the first film left off.”

Crackle is touting Joe Dirt 2 as the “first ever made-for-digital sequel to a major motion picture,” though the film will only hold onto that claim if it debuts before Netflix’s planned sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which is also set to arrive in 2015. Netflix has also struck a four-film deal

with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, which happens to be the studio behind Joe Dirt 2.

The original Joe Dirt was panned by critics, but it has maintained a long shelf life by acquiring a cult following. Spade and TBS planned an animated TV pilot based off the film in 2010, but that project never aired. “I’m beyond stoked that Joe Dirt will finally hit the screens again on Crackle,” said Spade in a release. “I’ve been sleeping in this wig for years and it will be nice to wear it in the daytime again.”

Joe Dirt 2 will debut across all of Crackle’s platforms, including its website, its mobile apps, and its digital TV apps.
