Will Community Return For A Sixth Season On Hulu?

The phrase “six seasons and a movie” has long been a rallying cry for Community fans (it’s based off a throwaway gag from season two.) When the former NBC comedy was axed earlier this year, Community fans were crushed–not only had their favorite show just been cancelled, but it went off the air just one season before the fanbase’s six-season goal.

Luckily for Community fans, there is a glimmer of hope that the much-desired sixth season will become a reality. According to several reports, producer Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is in talks with Hulu about a deal that would bring one more season of community to the premium online video platform.

The talks are still in early stages, though SPT is very interested in bringing Community back. “We, more than any other studios, fight for shows that we believe in,” SPT co-president Jamie Erlicht told The Hollywood Reporter. “This show had a remarkable history.” That history is closely tied to Hulu, where Community has consistently been one of the site’s most popular offerings despite its lackluster ratings on TV.

Several other beloved TV shows have been revived via online platforms over the past couple of years. In addition to its high-profile renewal of Arrested Development, Netflix will also release a fourth season of The Killing later this year. Netflix has already stated that it is not interested in picking up Community.

While Community is a logical choice to join that group, its fans shouldn’t drop the confetti just yet. A source close to the talks has informed Mashable that “conversations are so preliminary that it’d be wise to temper expectations at this point.” Be that as it may, it is refreshing to hear that Community is not quite dead yet. An online-only sixth season would be a great get for Hulu. As for the movie, Community fans will have to cross that bridge when they come to it.
