BBC America, YouTube To Stream ‘Doctor Who’ 50th Anniversary Pre-Show

I’m not quite sure how this works when you take into account his TARDIS, but Doctor Who is turning 50.

The BBC is celebrating its acclaimed science-fiction television program’s longevity stateside on Saturday, November 23 at 2:50PM ET. That’s when the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special Doctor Who: The Day of The Doctor is set to air on BBC America (the U.S. home of television’s longest-running sci-fi program, on which station it’s the #1 rated show). In anticipation of that cable and satellite TV event, BBC America, Nerdist Industries, and YouTube are bringing internet and television audiences a pre-show hopefully worth of Whovians worldwide.

Internet staple and connoisseur of things geek Veronica Belmont will host the Doctor Who Live 50th Pre-Show produced in partnership with Nerdist Industries straight from the online video friendly confines of YouTube Space LA. The 20-minute program kicks off just before the main event at 2:30PM ET and promises “a live curation of fan-created content being shared on social media from celebrations around the globe, plus chats with special guests including YouTube star Phil DeFranco” (who is a noted fan of the series).

But that’s not all! The live pre-show will be simultaneously streamed to audiences globally on BBC America’s YouTube channel and broadcast to television audiences on the BBC America TV station.

Doctor Who has an amazing social media following and is enormously popular, with millions of views on YouTube,” said Perry Simon, General Manager, BBC AMERICA in a statement. “Partnering with YouTube on an innovative pre-show will enable fans everywhere to join our celebration of this groundbreaking series’ 50th anniversary.”

More importantly, however, the show’s already apparently done very well. “I’m happy to report that the live pre-show went off without a hitch, and that fans everywhere thoroughly enjoyed The Day of the Doctor,” said host Veronica Belmont. “At least, they did in the time stream I just came from.”

Tune in on Saturday, November 23 for the pre-show, stick around until 4PM ET for the YouTube-exclusive post-show, and here’s to the Doctor’s 12th incarnation, and many more.
