Google TV has struggled to stay competitive with similar device such as Roku and Apple TV, but all that is about to change. At an event called “Breakfast with Sundar Pichai“, Google unveilved Chromecast, a dongle that will allow users to beam video to their TVs without needing a set-top box, all for just $35.
Chromecast, which attaches directly to a TV’s HDMI port, is revolutionary for several reasons. By connecting apps like YouTube and Netflix
directly to Internet-ready TVs, it does not require the user to understand any unfamiliar interfaces and is just as portable as any Android phone or iPhone. The $35 price tag is just icing on the cake. Right now, Apple TV costs $99. Google is essentially offering a more portable and easy-to-use gadget that provides many of the important streaming options of other devices for less than half the price. Good deal.
Google Chrome‘s official promo video for Chromecast shows lots of people having all sorts of fun with their favorite YouTube videos and Netflix programs.
Chromecast is already available, and instantly becomes one of the most attractive options on the digital TV market. Of course, us true cord cutters still know that all you really need to suit your digital TV needs is a $4 HDMI cable and whatever subscriptions you desire. For those looking for a more user-friendly option, however, Chromecast will be hard to beat.
