Indie Spotlight: An American Faffs About England In ‘Royal Baby Watch’

We receive a ton of tips every day from independent creators, unaffiliated with any major motion picture studios, television networks, new media studios, or other well-funded online video entities. The Indie Spotlight is where we’ll write about and shout out to a select few of them and bring you up to speed on the great (and sometimes not-so-great) attention-grabbing series you probably haven’t heard about until now.  Read previous installments here.

The in utero child of Prince William and his wife Catherine has been described as “the world’s most famous baby,” and at least one Yank is joining in on the hysteria. Comedian Dave Hill stars in Royal Baby Watch, a Funny or Die web series where he tours England to learn more about the upcoming birth while poking fun at the hoopla surrounding it.

Hill, a UCB veteran, decides it’s his duty to inform Americans about the Royal Baby. To that end, he journeys across the pond to speak with some important-sounding Londoners, visit the Duchess’ hometown, and get caught up in the hype. Two episodes have been released thus far, with more to come.

Royal Baby Watch has a Daily Show vibe to it, with plenty of awkward interviews and silly news graphic jokes driving the comedy. Hill himself seems like he could almost be a Daily Show correspondent, though given the content of his web series he’d probably rather spend his time chasing after Pippa Middleton. Still, I find it very just that, at the same time a Brit takes over America’s most popular fake news show, an American is bringing fake news of his own to Britain.

OTHER UNDER-THE-RADAR SERIES TO CHECK OUT:

  • Guidance. A comedy about the wayward efforts of three incompetent high school guidance counselors.
  • Chloe and Zoe. A pair of best friends find that their best laid schemes often go awry.
  • The Cutting Room. An upcoming neo-noir thriller with dark lighting and a pulsating soundtrack.
  • The Walking Tedd. A series that falls somewhere between The Walking Dead and Ted. Currently seeking funds on Kickstarter.
