Issa Rae Continues Executive Producing Streak With ‘Little Horribles’

Issa Rae is one of the fastest-rising stars in online video, and the Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl creator is continuing to do her part to bring viewers to otherwise underappreciated web series. The latest series to feature Rae’s name in the credits is Little Horribles, an introspective, sharp lesbian web series with a too-honest protagonist.

Little Horribles is written and created by Amy Rubin, who also stars as the eponymous main character, a low-key girl who penchant for being more frank than she needs to be. Several commenters and critics have compared the series to Girls, but not every show about young, sexually active people searching for their place in the world needs to stand in Lena Dunham’s shadow. Instead, let’s judge Little Horribles by its own qualities; stripped of any comparisons, it stands as a well-written effort that appeals to fairly wide audience.

Rae, who serves as the show’s executive producer, has a very brief appearance in the first episode (Other guests, such as Broad City‘s Ilana Glazer, will appear in future installments.) Though she adds little on screen, the presence of her fanbase has allowed Little Horribles to score a decent-sized audience.

Rae is very much in demand of late; she just booked a role as Nina Simone in a biopic based on the life of Lorraine Hansberry, and her I Hate LA Dudes sitcom will arrive later this year. Despite this, she has been sure to give back to the web series community that helped launch her career. Little Horribles isn’t the first series to enlist her help, but it’s one of the best, and I hope Rae continues to pick out web projects she likes and gives them the attention they deserve.
