The second season of Julia Stiles’ Blue recently concluded on WIGS, and, as is the channel’s nature, it is wasting no time shifting the spotlight onto another pair of well-known leading ladies. The YouTube Original Channel focused on female-centric drama has greenlit Susanna, which will star Hollywood notables Anna Paquin and Maggie Grace in its two main roles.
Susanna‘s plot sounds pretty typical for WIGS. Paquin is a mother who gets hospitalized for post-partum depression, and Grace is her career-focused sister, who must go out of her comfort zone to care for both her sibling and the baby. Virginia Madsen, who previous appeared in WIGS’ Jan, will also have a supporting role this time around.
For those unfamiliar with WIGS, it has built up a decent following based around its simple combination of top talent and simple themes that appeal to its middle-aged female audience. Stiles’ Blue is a perfect example of WIGS’ oeuvre; like in Susanna
, motherhood plays a big role. The entirety of that series can be viewed on the channel.Despite seeming like another cookie-cutter entry to WIGS’ library, Susanna may hint at a slight adjustment in the channel’s strategy. It is one of the first series greenlit by WIGS since the channel partnered with Fox back in February. One of the goals of the partnership is the potential development of WIGS content for TV, so casting TV talent like Paquin (who stars on True Blood), Grace (who gained mainstream attention for her role on Lost) and supporting actor Rob Benedict (most notably of Supernatural) seems like a conscious decision. But even if it doesn’t lead to anything on TV, Susanna sounds tailor-made for WIGS’ audience, and it will easily continue the channel’s truly expansive collection of acting-heavy web series.
