Taryn Southern, Other Notables Inaugurate YouTube Space LA Classes

In late November, YouTube opened its second Creator Space, an expansive Los Angeles facility in Playa Vista. Along with its primary function as a studio for independent creators, the Space will serve as a full-featured classroom through which aspiring YouTube stars can learn the tricks of the trade. The classroom is opening up with its inaugural class, with 25 creators picked to make up the student body. Though this group contains several unknowns, known names such as Taryn Southern, Wendy Nguyen, and John Elerick are among the chosen few.

Southern’s presence is an interesting one; she gets a lot of publicity, but her personal channel has under 100,000 subs, far beneath the level of other star YouTube performers. Nguyen’s fashion channel and Elericks comedy channel are both over 300,000 subs, but still trail the YouTube superstars

in their respective fields. Thus, the versatility of the YouTube Space classes is revealed: relatively invisible creators can use the tips they learn to become noticed, while more experienced YouTubers can attempt to jump into superstardom.

USA Today, who profiled some of the inaugural students, also released a video showing off the YouTube Space.

Of course, there will be many more classes at YouTube Space LA, some of which will be reserved for the winners of the various YouTube Next and NextUp competitions. Once the free, three-month program is completed, we’ll take a look at the chosen creators and see if YouTube’s teachers were truly able to offer the sage wisdom they claim to have.
