Kim Evey (Producer of The Guild) played the role of moderator to a stage filled with notables from the interesection of tech and geek. Day was the center of attention, but joined by Wil Wheaton (The Guild, Eureka), Veronica Belmont (Tekzilla), Tom Merritt (Tech News Today) and Mike Richardson (Founder of dark Horse Comics) to give loyal fans a taste of what to expect when Geek & Sundry launches on April 2.
Here’s a breakdown of all the new series:
The Flog (which was originally the name of Day’s blog) is a weekly program that will feature Day highlighing some of her favorite internet finds in addition to trying physical things unexpected and OOC (like working construction equipment or taking trapeze lessons). Sometimes she executes such things with aplomb. Other times she’s a little less poised. (Evey noted not all of the challenges have a happy ending, as Day fell into the net during the trapeze lesson and burst into tears.)
TableTop is a talk show hosted by Wil Wheaton that takes place while Wheaton and special guests play board games. The show will air bi-weekly, with each episode lasting around 30 minutes. While Wheaton is an avid board gamer, not all of his favorite board games will make it into the show. 7 Wonders, his favorite game for the past 5 years, didn’t make even make the cut. (I’m personally hoping for Killing Dr. Lucky to make an appearance. Or Pig Mania.)
Dark Horse Comics (with which Day and The Guild already have a great partnership) will be releasing a number of motion comics on Geek & Sundry, starting with The Secret. Future titles will include Hellboy, Conan the Barbarian and The Umbrella Academy. The hope is to bridge the gap between comics and online video, allowing new fans on both sides to emerge.
Sword & Lazer, a popular podcast, will now air bi-weekly on Geek & Sundry, too. A science fiction and fantasy book club, hosts Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt will show people that reading is cool again. If you want to get ahead of the curve and be prepared for the first episode, the first book discussed is slated to be The Magicians by Lev Grossman.
Written by a Kid is produced by Evey and may very well be the most interesting show on the channel. Each episode will feature top online directors entertaining script ideas that were (you guessed it!) written by children.
Last but not least, The Guild season 5 will be released on Geek & Sundry, complete with a healthy does of behind-the-scenes footage and bonus materials. You’ll be able to find previous seasons of The Guild on the channel, too, and be able to watch them seamlessly edited together as if they were each a major motion picture.
Geek & Sundry’s slate of programming holds great promise and I, like everyone who attended the WonderCon panel, will be tuning in April 2 to check it out. As should you.
