Jason Alexander Disses Dr. Phil, Touches Teen

Jason Alexander made his first toupeed appearance on Funny or Die back in July 2011, playing host and solicitor on a faux Sally Struthers infomercial aiming to benefit those Caucasians adversely affected by Netflix’s increase in subscription fees. Alexander made his second toupeed appearance on Funny or Die this week, playing the convincingly ineffective self-help television personality Donny Clay in the premiere episode of what looks to be the start of an FoD original web series.

The Donny Clay Show features Alexander donning slacks, a sports coat, and no tie, hating on Dr. Phil, and dispensing emotionally stagnant platitudes and not-so-vague sexual advances. His guests are one of the Tabloid Editors Association’s favorite couple, 17-year-old Courtney Stodden and her 51-year-old husband Doug Hutchinson. The two appear on the 90s era set of Clay’s daytime talk show to discuss their relationship and how not to judge one another and for Clay to not so conspicuously hit on an underage female in a two-piece.

I love me some Jason Alexander, but I think he could do better. He channels one helluva wannabe Maury Povich, but the fake interview schtick where the interviewer disses the dude to to hit on the conventionally attractive girl is as hackneyed as Clay’s pop psychology. Before the next installment, I think Alexander should check out some tape of Matt Zaller and note that in the online video genre of faux celebrity interviews, the obvious is oftentimes not as funny as doing  something else.
