MTV’s Trending Web Series is Called ‘Bigger than the Buzz’

Buzzworthy is MTV’s version of a Perez Hilton, Just Jared or Pink is the New Blog with a decided preference towards coverage of music and MTV events in lieu of your average tabloid gossip fare (though there’s still plenty of that). Bigger than the Buzz is Buzzworthy’s brand spakin’ new addition to the glut of ‘trending’ original web series with a bias for music oriented online ephemera and whatever left-of-normal news item involving international pop stars is trending on Twitter.

The web show stars Buzzworthy editor and founder Tamar Anitai and MTV News’ senior music writer and audiophile James Montgomery. The two engage in passionate discussions about the day’s topics (the premiere episode tackled “Mermaidgate 2011,” “bunga bunga cough syrup robotripping nightmare” Popstar Trishli, and predictions for this year’s VMA’s nominees) in a dimly lit bar over tall glasses of milk and clips and stills that bring context to the conversations.

Anitai and Montogmery’s casual rapport and intimate knowledge of things pop make Bigger than the Buzz

entertaining enough for those already familiar with the pair’s work on Buzzworthy and MTV news. The clean production and alt choice of topics may win the show (and Buzzworthy) a few more viewers (and readers) outside of the program’s innate demo, but my guess is not many. Not that it’s bad (it’s kinda okay!), but it doesn’t feel like that’s the point of the program.

Bigger than the Buzz is a natural video extension of Buzzworthy, meant to compliment rather than eclipse the blog. The show’s a way to offer something more to fans and create another form of inventory for advertisers. It’s basically a videoblog, and given the success of other text-only outlets that recently crossed over into serious video production, I’m suprised MTV didn’t start filming sooner.
