Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone – aka the guys from The Lonely Island – are set to drop their sophomore novelty rap album sometime next year.
The trio released their first album, Incredibad in February 2010. It debuted at #1 on the iTunes album charts, #13 on Billboard’s top album charts, was the eighth best-selling rap album of 2009 with over 246,000 copies sold (which says something about the chartmakers’ definition of rap, which is to say it makes about as much sense as some rap lyrics), and currently ranks in the top 1,000 digital bestsellers on Amazon.
The success of Incredibad was largely due to the SNL digital shorts that doubled as music videos for most of the album’s
tracks, including “Dick in a Box,” “Jizz in My Pants,” “I’m on a Boat,” and “Like a Boss.” Expect more original music videos from The Lonely Island to debut in the next several months leading up to their second album’s release.Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone are the online video auteurs with the greatest internet success story. The three were tapped by MTV in 2005 to write selections for the MTV Movie Awards based on their popular online sketches. Their bits impressed Jimmy Fallon, who got them in front of Lorne Michaels, who hired Samberg as a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live, and made Schaffer and Taccone writers for the show.
