Sure you might just see them as the cheerleaders that you hated in high school, but the process it takes to make the team is an enduring one. Not only are they looking for dance talent, but they are looking for the total package, of looks, and personality. Each episode starts with three previous Orlando Magic Dancers discussing their experiences about the process. If you make the team one year, it does not guarantee you a spot on the following seasons. These ‘veterans’ compete with ‘rookies’ that come from all over with talent and good looks to take their spots. You follow the girls through pre-audition, boot camp, selection, to their bikini photo shoot, and finally taking their performance on the road.
The web series is produced by freelance producer, Jason Dewberry, and Orlando Magic Broadcasting. Dewberry worked with Magic for eleven seasons, and originally they did an interactive five-week series for TV, and then every year after they did a one hour special. This last season they wanted to follow the dancers past auditions through the season, and decided the web was were they wanted to take it.
The show is an easy watch, I gladly sat through all the episodes, and I’m sure you know that is rare. I’m slightly biast coming from a bit of dance background, it’s interesting to see the path not chosen. Not to mention they have the receipe for success, cute girls, dancing, and an inside look to world not often seen. The production quality is polished minus a few graphics and audio levels. And at times there’s a few too many feelings for my taste, but could be easily solved by following a few specific characters in more depth from beginning to end.
There are a total of seven episodes, roughly twenty four minutes each that have been broken down into more web-friendly episodes on YouTube and NBA.com. If you want to see where the girls are now, follow their Twitter account as they prep for this year’s auditions.
