A week ago, on TheWB.com, Rob Corddry launched what’s arguably the greatest online series to date. Now he’s taking Childrens’ Hospital on a digital dog and pony show around the web. First stop: Comedy.com.
Taking a page out of YouTube’s playbook, the site has made Corddry its first official celebrity guest editor, giving him control of the featured videos (which include an episode of Childrens’ Hospital executive producer David Wain’s Wainy Days, a couple appearances by Zach Galifianakis, Jon Lajoie, and unicorns) and an opportunity to opine on what’s funny.
Corddry also gave a shoutout to his top five favorite comedians (on Comedy.com). That select group includes Mike Birbiglia, Zach Galifianakis, Louis CK, A.D. Miles (whose Horrible People ranks up there with Childrens’ Hospital), and Mike Dunphy.
Here’s Louis CK on a problem every grown man with wife and kids must be facing:
Launched last February by two ex-Disneyites (Dean Valentine and Scott Immergut), Comedy.com is another iteration of the Funny or Die-esque aggregator of clips 18 to 35 year-old males might find amusing, plus a healthy dose of standup and a sprinkling of original series. That sprinkling includes okay-but-not-must-see programs like the surprisingly watchable Make a Hot Girl Laugh, the video game and gamer satire Glitch in the System, the far-too short-lived Incognegro, and a lot of sketch.
Bringing Corddry on board for a week of curation is the biggest PR push from Comedy.com we’ve since the site’s debut. It’s a good move that’s sure to attract some attention, but if Comedy.com wants to be a true contender in the crowded space of online comedy it should focus its efforts on creating series like Childrens’ Hospital instead of just promoting them.
