For a long time now, Fangoria TV and Horror Channel were the only sites offering horror fans their necessary fix of gore and suspenseful editing in an online video format. That’s about to change in a pretty big way.
The production company behind the Saw franchise, Twisted Pictures, has signed one of the most impressive online deals since, well, a few months ago with Prom Queen TV. According to Variety, Twisted is partnering with video-sharing site Break.com (which, unlike its video-sharing site brethren, has kept out of the news, flown under the radar, and sidestepped potential lawsuits) to produce a full-length horror movie to be distributed online. Break has also signed deals with NBC Universal and Endemol to create original series for the site, but neither deal was as impressive as this.
“The Internet Killer” will be released in short webisodes about three minutes long, making the comparisons to Prom Queen TV somewhat inevitable. But Prom Queen TV’s big backer, Vuguru
, is an online production company. Having the team that created Saw produce an original feature is a substantial shift, merging old media and new media together in a bold way.Eventually, the webisodes will appear as a full-length feature in foreign theaters and on TV and DVD in America, but the Break webisodes will be the first release. Production hasn’t begun yet, so no release date has been given either. But with the quick turnaround that the Saw films have made in the past few years (a new film is released each Halloween), I’m guessing it will appear before 2007 is up. Check back with Break.com throughout the year to watch the shift from user-submitted content to original productions.
