Last week, Alejo Igoa overtook MrBeast to hit the #1 spot in our Global Sub Top 50 ranking. That lead lasted a week — now Igoa is #2, MrBeast is #3, and last week’s #5 has bubbled up to #1.

I say “bubbled up” because in this case, we’re talking about a chef: Nick DiGiovanni. The eminent figure in the YouTube food world brought his main channel’s subscriber count above 33 million after adding 1.1 million new subscribers during the week that was. If that surge doesn’t deserve Nick’s little knife throw trick, I don’t know what does.
Nick DiGiovanni’s Olympics viewership hack wasn’t quite what you might think
DiGiovanni recently celebrated his Italian-American heritage by serving as a torchbearer for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. As part of his Olympic experience, the MasterChef alum also cooked up some gold-medal dishes, including some pasta shaed like the Olympic rings.
That little video has been huge for DiGiovanni. It already has more than 308 million total views, making it one of the top-viewed Shorts on DiGiovanni’s main channel. Collabs with MrBeast and Zach King are the only Nick D. Shorts that have been watched more often.
So if you want to know why DiGiovanni is #1 in the Global Sub Top 50, that’s the short answer. It’s a good time to be a brand that is adjacent to the Olympics or aligned with Italian culture, and Nick DiGiovanni’s YouTube operation checks both of those boxes.
But what if there’s more to the story than that? The Olympic pasta video provides a tidy explanation for DiGiovanni’s uptick, but the YouTube foodie also uploaded some long-form videos over the past few weeks, too. As part of his celebration of the spirit of international competition, DiGiovanni tested breakfasts from around the world and compared them against one another.
Bingo. Dialing into a major tentpole is one thing, but bringing in viewers from all over the world is even better. YouTube Shorts is inherently an international game, and DiGiovanni is so good at playing it that he just won a (metaphorical) gold medal. His ability to engage with culture alongside food is a key asset, one he shares with other food creators like Andy Cooks, Uncle Roger, and Lionfield.
Just look at Secret Foodie, another entrant in this week’s Global Sub Top 50. By taking viewers onto the streets of India for up-close looks at local dishes, Secret Foodie proves that the best approach to food content is one that’s global in scale but homespun in tone. These videos make viewers feel like they’re a knowing insider, and that’s probably why Secret Foodie added 460,000 new subscribers this week.
Between these insights and the very different type of food discourse we gleaned from our other Top 50 chart, this week’s rankings are all about good eats. DiGiovanni’s breakfast video reminds us that every culture chows down in a different way, but all cultures are equally curious about what the rest of the world has as a pick-me-up. Leave it to a seasoned chef like DiGiovanni to provide the education his subscribers are seeking.
