This week, the Global Sub Top 50 is led by four channels that each added one million new subscribers during the second full week of August. One of those channels is led by MrBeast, who should be familiar to anyone who follows these charts (or YouTube in general). Two others, Zee Music Company and WWE, belong to brands with long track records on YouTube. The fourth member of the million-sub club is a bit more surprising: Brazil’s Lucan Pevidor zipped to the top of the ranking after landing outside the Top 50 a week ago.

Gaming remains a popular category in the Top 50, with game engines like Minecraft and Roblox well-represented. Is there any connective tissue uniting Top 50 gamers? I searched for those ties as I looked into this week’s ranking.
Animals will play a key role in the future of video game content
More than 15 years after its initial launch, Minecraft is still (by several measures) the biggest game on YouTube. In theory, another game will eventually usurp Minecraft’s throne, but what title will that be? Roblox, with its Minecraft-esque sandbox characteristics, is probably the most logical answer. Rockstar is hoping the answer will be Grand Theft Auto VI. Epic Games’ Fortnite is an option as well, especially as it embraces custom creator-made “islands.”
After perusing this week’s Global Sub Top 50, I’ve come up with a simpler answer: The next big video game on YouTube will be the one with the best animals. And no, I’m not necessarily talking about Animal Crossing.
There are multiple channels in this week’s Top 50 that fit animals into their videos, whether those fauna belong there or not. This makes sense when you consider the history of YouTube. Animals have been gold on the platform since the days of Tillman, and that trend has continued into 2020s.
Take Mewitto. The 18th-place finisher in the Global Sub Top 50 is, according to its channel description, “just a green cat.” In reality, Mewitto is filled with Geometry Dash videos, and I don’t see a cat in sight (unless you count the inclusion of the “huh” sound effect).
Mewitto added 343,300 weekly subscribers, but it’s hard to say how many of those followers are coming for the green cat and how many are coming for Geometry Dash. The blocky side-scroller is a popular game, but in a certain sense, it’s also a blank canvas. Its repetitive, monotonous gameplay pairs well with unrelated content, and what better unrelated topic to shoehorn in than YouTube’s beloved cats?
Geometry Dash‘s malleable nature is a key quality as we consider the future of gaming content. The idea that Minecraft and Roblox are virtual sandboxes that can be paired with any other trend is key to their continued success. In Roblox, for example, the Animal Hospital (Anomaly) game mode provides an easy canvas for synthesizing gameplay with animal allusions. That’s how Sona Extra 505, an Animal Hospital (Anomaly) afficionado, was able to go from zero views to 200 million weekly views in just a few short months.

So as we return to the initial question, the answer of “Roblox” now seems even more inevitable. One day, the hub of virtual worlds will probably eclipse Minecraft, and the depth of creativity it enables is the biggest reason why.
Of course, there’s still time for games like GTA VI to steal Roblox’s thunder. If you’re planning to stream Rockstar’s next open-world game, maybe consider an avatar that’s a pig or a cat. If you do, the views and subscribers will follow.
