The last week of May was an unusually bounteous period for YouTube’s top channels. Six different entrants at the head of the Global Top 50 surpassed one billion weekly views. The #1 channel, MrBeast, did even better. Jimmy Donaldson‘s main YouTube hub collected more than two billion weekly views.

Beyond the #1 spot, two themes dominated the Global Top 50. Short-form channels account for more than 80% of the entrants, and half of the channels in the ranking hail from India.
Men are from Mars, women are from Venus (YouTube edition)
Last week, we explored the central romantic relationship in KPop Demon Hunters — the affection between Rumi and Jinu — and used it as a rubric for the depiction of gender roles on YouTube Shorts. This week, we’re going to zoom out and paint a more general picture of the differences between men and women — at least according to the top channels in our Global Top 50.
Rumi and Jinu are a good-natured rule-follower and a lovable rule-breaker, respectively, and those descriptions have become extremely popular on YouTube Shorts. The most popular short-form videos that lionize men celebrate them for inventive solutions that might not always play by the rules. Women, meanwhile, are lauded for their ability to find control and calm within chaotic environments.
Case in point: Let’s look at Hublot Baggins. The channel’s most-watched Shorts clip depicts a father who finds an outside-the-box parenting method that makes all of his children feel included. The third most-watched Hublot Baggins video is even more defiant and inclusive.
Some Hublot Baggins videos feature women, but the most popular clips fitting that description are far more orderly. A mother who finds the most fair way to slice and distribute watermelon has become a short-form hit, pulling in more than 156 million lifetime views.
This dynamic persists across other YouTube channels that explore gender stereotypes. Based on the title of the His Story channel, you would expect to find videos about men. They are there, and they tend to depict that same ingenuity and silliness that can be found on Hublot Baggins. There are also some women who star in His Story videos, but those clips explore themes like virtue and honesty.
Both of these channels are thriving thanks to videos like these. His Story got 470 million weekly views to reach 34th place in the Global Top 50, while Hublot Baggins was right behind with 438.8 million weekly views and a 39th-place finish in our viewership ranking.
How much will these gender roles imprint onto the young viewers who are watching channels like Hublot Baggins? Will the next generation be filled with outside-the-box guys and determined gals?
It will take years before we’re able to answer those questions. We’re turning over to a new cohort, with members of Generation Beta beginning to be born. The role models those youngsters will see on social media might end up being far more traditional than what Gen Z and Generation Alpha experienced.

- India: 25
- United States: 8
- Canada: 3
- Australia and Indonesia: 2
- Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Germany, Pakistan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkiye, United Kingdom, and Vietnam: 1
This week, 43 channels in the Top 50 are primarily active on YouTube Shorts.
