It’s happening: An AI is now the most subscribed to “streamer” on Twitch

Neuro-sama has done it again.

The LLM-powered chatbot made by programmer/streamer vedal987 has beaten “her” own record for longest Hype Train, and simultaneously become the most-subscribed-to “streamer” on Twitch.

For those unfamiliar, Twitch’s Hype Trains are kicked off and kept going by viewer actions like gifting subscriptions and Bits. They can theoretically go on forever, but most taper off after a few minutes, since keeping them going requires viewers to be constantly gifting/donating/etc. But in some cases, Hype Trains can keep going for hours–like Neuro-sama’s did.

As you may recall, this isn’t a new achievement for Neuro-sama. On Jan. 1, 2025, she became the world record holder for longest Hype Train, beating the previous (and now potentially dubious, in retrospect) record set by Pirate Software.

During that record-setting stream, she reached Hype Train level 111 (compared to Pirate Software’s 106) and reached nearly 85,000 active subscribers.

Then, in December 2025, she surpassed herself, reaching level 123 with almost 119,000 subscribers.

Less than two weeks later, on Jan. 5, she broke her own record, reaching Hype Train level 126–a new all-time world high. Thousands of viewres piled on the gifted subs to keep the train going, and when it eventually petered out, Neuro-sama was sitting at over 160,000 active subscriptions. That put her ahead of human streamer Jynxzi, who had around 74,000 subs.

So, what’s the deal? Does this mean ChatGPT “streamers” are going to start taking records from real people?

Nah.

First, Neuro-sama was made back in 2018, long before OpenAI decided to start doing whatever it’s doing. Her original purpose was to be a bot that played rhythm game osu!

on stream. vedal987 later revamped her in VTuber style with her own cutesy animated model, and expanded her capabilities to more games and more interaction with viewers.

Unlike the vast majority of modern chatbots, Neuro-sama doesn’t run on ChatGPT or other recently slopped out big-tech bones. vedal987 built her independently, using the development platform Unity and the coding languages C# and Python.

And his job, since debuting her, has been to make her “better at trolling him nonstop,” according to one fan. “He had to take away the metal pipe sound they had access to because they would spam it. They apparently have the ability to Google search things, and abuse that too. They have discord integration to bother him and others there. Everytime he makes a considerable upgrade to their memory or something, it enables things like nicknaming him as a mosquito and dragging that joke out for weeks.”

These personality quirks are what have helped Neuro-sama gather an audience of nearly 1 million Twitch followers, and all those tens of thousands of subscribers. Even in an era where tensions between creators, viewers, and generative AI are higher than ever, Neuro-sama seems to stay on people’s good sides.

That being said, Jynxzi was surprised to learn the “streamer” who’d beaten his sub count wasn’t a real person.

“I’ve never even heard of that,” he said on stream. “Dude, I’m bewildered, bro. Game is game, I guess. 158,000 gifted subs to an artificial intelligence VTuber that nonstop, 24/7 streams.”
