YouTube’s gaming hub Playables is getting competitive

YouTube‘s gaming hub Playables has been available for all users for six months now, and it’s due for an upgrade. To make its selection of casual titles more appealing for players — and to celebrate platform-wide themes like community and collaboration — YouTube is testing some multiplayer experiences within Playables.

According to the page that tracks YouTube’s ongoing test features and experiments, two games available on Playables now offer competitive environments. Ludo Club and Magic Tiles 3 are available on the mobile and desktop versions of YouTube, and they can both be played alongside other competitors in real time.

By testing a multiplayer experience with just two titles, YouTube is carrying on with the cautious approach it has applied to Playables up to this point. After teasing the hub back in June of 2023, YouTube rolled it out among Premium subscribers later that year.

A public launch followed in 2024. YouTube hasn’t provided any data on the amount of traffic Playables has pulled in so far, but the hub offers titles from some casual game franchises (such as Rovio’s Angry Birds) that reach millions of players.

If YouTube wants Playables to reach its full potential, harnessing the communal spirit of YouTube culture is a good idea. Platforms like Discord offer features that allow users to co-watch YouTube together, and the collab has long been a staple for creators who wish to build their networks and audiences.

YouTube clearly recognizes the power of interpersonal interactions on its platforms. Earlier this year, an “Add Yours” button arrived on Shorts, where users can now be prompted to add their responses to viral content.

Multiplayer games on Playables put a twist on that collaborative atmosphere. Some YouTube creators have found that competing against their friends can make for entertaining content. A good example of that concept recently arrived on Ludwig‘s channel, where the mononymous creator uploaded a multi-stage gaming competition featuring himself and fellow streamer Northernlion.

Will Playables foster similar team-ups in the future? To do so, it will probably need more than two multiplayer games on offer, but that will come after the current testing phase.
