Andrew Callaghan is back on YouTube, and he plans to remain active for the next 55 weeks. The filmmaker known for his man-on-the-street interviews has returned to his Channel 5 hub nine months after he was accused of sexual misconduct.
Callaghan rose to fame on the channel All Gas No Brakes, on which he traveled across the country conducting interviews with strangers. Alongside with co-founders Nic Mosher and Evan Gilbert-Katz, Callaghan split from the All Gas No Brakes hub in 2021 to launch a new venture called Channel 5. His star continued to rise when he directed This Place Rules, an HBO documentary about the January 6 uprising.
Shortly after the film’s release, Callaghan found himself in hot water. At least three women accused him of sexual coercion. One of the accusers claimed that Callaghan “wasn’t taking a simple no for an answer” after the pair met on a dating app.
Callaghan initially responded through his legal team, but he eventually addressed the allegations in a video he uploaded on his personal YouTube channel. “Up until this point, I didn’t even really realize I had this pattern that had affected multiple people,” he said. “I’d also like to apologize for my silence. I think when this stuff first came out I was in a state of denial and shock.”
After laying low for months, Callaghan dropped a new Channel 5 upload on October 8. His latest mini-doc hits on many of his recurring themes, including local eccentrics and January. The centerpiece of the video is an encounter with Jacob Chansley, the right-wing personality known as the “QAnon Shaman”.
At the end of the video, Callaghan revealed that he plans to post a new Channel 5 video every Sunday at 5:55 PM for the next 55 weeks. Abridged versions of his films will be uploaded to YouTube, with longer cuts available for Patreon backers.
One of those videos may relate to the National Hobo Convention, where Callaghan was spotted earlier this year. Users of the Channel 5 subreddit also noticed that the other All Gas No Brakes co-founders unfollowed Callaghan on social media, though Channel 5’s About section still states that its videos are “directed, produced, filmed, edited, and created by Andrew Callaghan, Nic Mosher, and Evan Gilbert-Katz.”
